Assembly and Senate Committee on Natural Resources (and Environment)

As of 5/13/20011: These two Committees probably correspond to one another but there could be others or a difference in legislative coverage.  Note difference in titling “and Environment” is omitted from the Assembly Committee.  This note can be considered an early version of “one stop shopping” for these Legislators (i.e., format and content will change).

Given the memo this week from DNR Secretary Stepp to Governor Walker it seems time to focus on these committees.

Legislative Committee Calendar

Knowing when a committee is meeting and what is on the schedule is dynamic with many static elements.  Planning your testimony (exhibits) or contact (letter, email, phone call, etc.) is perhaps the most difficult thing to accomplish.  Public Hearings are extremely confined by how long you have to state your issues.  Creating petitions or other exhibits and getting them on the record before hearings is probably one of the most effective things you can do.  Other contacts can raise legislative and journalists awareness of what’s hot!

Wisconsin Legislature:  Schedule of Committee Activities

Use and review this calendar frequently to be certain you are current … click on the entry will show you the “agenda”.  The current day is highlighted – scroll until you see it!  Executive Sessions are open and your presence is a statement of  “public interest” but no public testimony is taken.  It may be an opportunity to see a legislator before or after – use it!

Emailing or contacting the Legislature

Wisconsin Legislature

The members, committees  can be found via website by clicking above.  This may or may not be what you really want to do!  What if you want to send all the Committee members an email?  What if you want to see if your representative is on the Committee, check out their Home Page or send them an individual email?  What if geographically speaking you have not memorized District Numbers?  Hopefully these pages will expedite your task, refresh your geographic memory and allow you to do a single or several emails without a lot of difficulty!  Just click on the Access WI Legislature category and the information alluded to will appear as part of this blog (as it will in other relevant blog entries – assuming the link is ready for that committee).  Select the Group or List you are interested in!

The members understandably want to know if you are in their district – even though they take contributions from lobbyists and corporations that do not live in the district either.  Do not let that slow you down since you can make political contributions to any politician (or opponent) and talk to your friends and family who live in the district (if you do not) about what their representative is doing in Madison and how if affects all of us.  You might want to copy your friends the email you are sending their representative – whether you use direct, cc or bcc is also your choice!  If you have questions about how to cut and paste, open email and you are reading this then you are only a few steps away from showing your representatives – “What democracy looks like!”  Ask your friends for a little help!!
